We operate as a team. We do not consider any instructor more important than any other or than any student. 0ur dojo is a family from White Belt to Black. Respect is always a mutual agreement between students and instructors. Rank is not as important to us as is for every person in our dojo family to reach their full Martial Arts potential.

After that he entered the Air Force in 1981(37thAir Rescue and Recovery Squadron) while in he studied multiple other systems. He became 1982 & 1983 Full Contact Bare knuckle Underground Street Fighting Champion.

Dave has
two terrific boys. Cody (9), who is a former AZ. and Calif. State U.S.K.A.champion and a Brown Belt and Ty(6) who has been learning for about two years, they are his inspiration.

Dave is also an advocate of training in the Martial Arts despite physical limitations. He practices, teaches and fights, despite a previously broken back, heart attack at the age of thirty, bad hips and knees and other health problems. He says," I have two choices, I can either let these problems take me over, or I can use the power G-d gave me to take control of all Spiritual, mental and physical aspects of my life. I choose the latter, only the weak let adversity control them. and weakness is not an Honorable trait."

Dave having 37 years experience in the Martial Arts is constantly learning other systems to provide the best teaching skills he can, to better serve his students. He holds Black Belt Ranks in three styles of Kenpo and Asian Freestyle Kickboxing but is a life long student, realizing that mastery is a never ending journey. He is currently studying the deeper concepts of Kenpo, under his instructor Mr.Pat Salantri.

The Martial Artists that he admires and has had an  impact,(whether direct  or indirect), on how he teaches are, Sensei Ray Silverstrand, Sensei Pat Salantri, Sensei Drake Sass.

MMA, Shinpu-Ren & Youth Kenpo Instructor

  Todd Keightley

Growing up, it was hard to find a sport that kept him as interested or as focused as the martial arts. He went between soccer, baseball, basketball, and swimming. At the age of 8, he took my first karate lesson at Tracy’s Karate Studios in St. Louis, Missouri under Sensei Tim Greek. He progressed through the ranks at a good pace, trying to learn everything that he could. His first tournament was the Silver Sun Showdown hosted by Sensei Terry Cramer. He didn’t place either event that he entered, but Sensei Todd was hooked. He started competing in as many tournaments as he could. He competed in the Midwest circuit in both local and national tournaments. On June 5, 2001, all of his hard work came together and paid off in capturing his first Kata Grand Champion title at the 11th Annual Shorin Ryu Pro Am.

On August 27, 2004, Sensei Todd tested for and earned his Shodan rank under Sensei Greek. He continued my training in weapons, weapon’s defense, and ground fighting under Sensei Dennis Maginn. He earned his Nidan Rank on December 23, 2006. During that time, he had moved to Prescott, AZ to start at Prescott College and was going for an Adventure Education major. He found Shinpu-Ren Family Karate in search to continue his kumite, learning, and training. Coming from the softer style of Chinese Kenpo, it took a while to get used to the stances of an Okinawan Hardstyle, but was always up for a challenge. He continued competing in the U.S.K.A Circuit and took 1st in kumite at the first U.S.K.A. tournament, which just happened to be the 2005 California State Karate Championships. On November 3, 2007, Sensei Todd went back to California and took 1st again in Adult Black Belt Heavyweight Kumite and captured the Grand Champion Kumite. He was promoted to my Shodan rank in Shinpu-Ren on November 16, 2007, and was awarded Shinpu-Ren Family Karate’s Instructor of the Year for 2008.

Thought of the week

You will get out of your training exactly what you put into it. If you only half way apply yourself, that is what kind of Martial Artist you will be. True mastery comes from dedication and determination.
